Call for papers
Overview: The advancement of embedded software and systems, such as intelligent vehicles, industrial robots, wearable devices, and Internet-of-Things, has great societal and economic impacts. It is of utmost importance to ensure the safety, efficiency, and security of their design and implementation. The International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems (ICESS) is a global forum for researchers and developers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss emerging ideas and trends in embedded software and systems. The conference has a broad scope covering the design, implementation, optimization, and validation of embedded software and systems in various domains, with recent focus on cyber-physical systems, Internet-of-Things, embedded security, and autonomous software systems.
ICESS 2021 is the 17th International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems. It will be held in Shanghai, China, and is the next event of a series of highly successful international conferences, held in recent years as ICESS 2020 (Virtual Event), ICESS 2019 (Las Vegas, USA), ICESS 2017 (Sydney, Australia), ICESS 2016 (Sichuan, China), ICESS 2015 (New York, USA), ICESS 2014 (Paris, France), ICESS 2013 (Sydney, Australia), ICESS 2012 (Liverpool, UK), ICESS 2011 (Changsha, China), and ICESS 2010 (Bradford, UK).
Starting from ICESS 2021, we are proud to announce that the conference will be sponsored by Elsevier and Journal of Systems Architecture (JSA). ICESS 2021 will accept both regular and poster papers. All accepted regular papers will be directly published on a special issue in Elsevier JSA. The accepted poster papers will be presented during the poster session in the conference and may not appear in the JSA special issue. However, authors of poster papers are welcome to extend the work and submit the extended version to the journal after the conference.

Paper Submission Guidelines: All submissions must contain significant novel ideas and technical results that have not been published or concurrently submitted to any other venue. Submitted manuscripts should be written in English, using the format for Elsevier Journal of Systems Architecture (here is a LaTeX template and a Word template). Please make sure the submission is one column following the provided template. Papers must be submitted as PDF files through this Easy Chair website: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icess2021. ICESS 2021 will follow a single-blind review process, allowing authors to reveal their names and affiliations in their submissions. Submissions must be no longer than 20 pages, excluding references.
Important Dates:
- Paper Submission: August 14th, 2021, 11:59pm, Anywhere on Earth
- Notification: October 6th, 2021
- Camera-ready version: October 26th, 2021
- Conference: December 13-14th, 2021

>Final Paper Submission
This year's full papers will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture (JSA). Please carefully read and follow the instructions below to submit the final version of your paper to JSA.
Deadline for submission: October 26, 2021 (11:59pm Anywhere on Earth)
Important notes:
- In the final version of your paper, please address reviewer comments to the extent possible. You may use up to 2 additional pages for your final paper, if they are needed to address reviewer comments.
- In addition to your updated paper, you will be asked to submit a document with your responses to reviewer comments (if you end up using additional pages in your updated paper to address reviewer comments, make sure to clearly explain / justify that in your responses document) and a document listing your conflicts of interest.
Detailed instructions:
- Go to the JSA submission page: https://www.editorialmanager.com/jsa/default1.aspx and click on the "Register Now" button, complete the registration process and log in as an Author (if you already have an account, you can directly enter your Username and Password and click on "Author Login").
-
From the Author Main Menu, choose "Submit New Manuscript"

- From the Article Type dropdown box on the next page, choose VSI:ICESS2021 and click on "Proceed".

-
This will take you to a page where you can attach files. Please upload the following three attachments:
- A PDF or Word version of your updated paper, using the "Manuscript File" type.
- A PDF or Word document with your responses to reviewer comments, using the "Response to Reviewers" type.
- A PDF or Word document with your conflicts of interest (list the ICESS 2021 PC members that you have conflicts with, same as you should have done in EasyChair at the time of your initial submission), using the "Conflict of Interest" document type.
- Skip the General Information and Review Preferences sections and proceed directly to the Additional Information section, where you will be asked to answer two questions.
- Skip the Comments section, proceed to the Manuscript Data section and enter your manuscript information if it is not auto-populated.
- Once you have completed and reviewed all information, click on "Build PDF for Approval" and follow the instructions to finalize your submission.
