Call for papers

Overview: The advancement of embedded software and systems, such as intelligent vehicles, industrial robots, wearable devices, and Internet-of-Things, has great societal and economic impacts. It is of utmost importance to ensure the safety, efficiency, and security of their design and implementation. The IEEE International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems (ICESS) is a global forum for researchers and developers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss emerging ideas and trends in embedded software and systems. The conference has a broad scope covering the design, implementation, optimization, and validation of embedded software and systems in various domains, with recent focus on cyber-physical systems, Internet-of-Things, embedded security, and autonomous software systems.

ICESS 2020 is the 16th IEEE International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems. It will be held in Shanghai, P. R. China, and is the next event of a series of highly successful international conferences, held in recent years as ICESS 2019 (Las Vegas, USA), ICESS 2017 (Sydney, Australia), ICESS 2016 (Sichuan, China), ICESS 2015 (New York, USA), ICESS 2014 (Paris, France), ICESS 2013 (Sydney, Australia), ICESS 2012 (Liverpool, UK), ICESS 2011 (Changsha, China), and ICESS 2010 (Bradford, UK).

All accepted papers are expected to be included in IEEE Xplore and indexed by EI. Selected papers, after further revisions, will be considered for publication in special issues of IEEE Internet of Things Journal (IoT-J) and Elsevier Journal of Systems Architecture (JSA). ICESS 2020 will be sponsored by the IEEE and the IEEE Computer Society.

Conference Scope: Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Paper Submission Guidelines:Submissions should contain significant novel ideas and technical results that have not been published or concurrently submitted to any other venue. Submitted manuscripts should be written in English conforming to the IEEE conference proceedings format (8.5" x 11" page size, two-column). All paper submissions must represent original and unpublished work. Papers must be submitted as PDF files through EasyChair website: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=icess2020.

ICESS 2020 will follow a single-blind review process allowing the authors to reveal their names and affiliations on their submissions. Papers should not be longer than 8 pages in the IEEE conference format. Some papers may be accepted after review as short papers; the camera-ready versions of such papers should normally not exceed 4 pages. Authors of accepted papers (regular-length or short papers) will have the option to pay for up to 2 extra pages at the time of registration.

Call for papers for IEEE Internet of Things Journal Special Issue

Journal Scope: This Special Issue on Emerging Safety, Efficiency, and Security of Embedded Software and Systems on Internet of Things solicits topics as follows, but not limited to:

Submission Format and Guideline: All submitted papers must be clearly written in excellent English and contain only original work, which has not been published by or is currently under review for any other journal or conference. Call for papers for Elsevier Journal of Systems Architecture Special Issue

Overview:With the constraint of limited resources, embedded systems demand novel security techniques to protect their critical operations. For robustness, various resource-efficient fault tolerance techniques for reliable operations are also needed. On the other hand, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) has become the key enabling technology for many applications, from recommendation systems to facial recogintion. However, the Deep Learning and Deep Reinforcement Learning, as the most effective AI/ML techniques, are generally quite complex where the model training are very computation-intensive and are typically performed offline and in the cloud. Even the runtime model inference may demand significant computing power from the computing platform, which may be a heterogeneous mixture of multicore CPUs, GPUs, DSPs, FPGAs and ASICs. Such complex requirements on safety, security, reliability and intelligence call for innovative security, fault tolerance, and AI/ML techniques for resource-constained embedded systems, such as Internet of Things (IoTs), where many challenging research issues of performance, efficiency, power-consumption, reliability, dependability and security need to be addressed.

Journal Scope: This special section aims to present a collection of papers on the following topics in the context of safe and intelligent embedded software and systems:

All original manuscripts that fit within the scope are welcome. Authors of selected papers presented at the 2020 IEEE International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems (ICESS) are especially encouraged to submit to this SI.

JSA has adopted the Virtual Special Issue model to speed up the publication process, where Special Issue papers are published in regular issues, but marked as SI papers. Acceptance decisions are made on a rolling basis. Therefore, authors are encouraged to submit papers early, and need not wait until the submission deadline.
